 Objectives: To evaluate periodontal status in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: Four hundred type 2 diabetics (diagnosed by criteria of IDF-2005) with age or = 45 years old getting oral examination at Department of Odonto-Stomatology Bachmai Hospital from 6/2010 to 6/2011 were invited to participate in the cross-sectional study. Periodontal examination included full-mouth assessment for Oral Hygiene Index simplified (OHI-S), Gingival Index (GI) and Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Need (CPITN). Results: Type 2 diabetics' oral hygiene was very poor with the mean of OHI-S as 4.3 + or - 1.1. All of the subjects were suffered from gingivitis. Among them: 11.3 percent mild, 65.7 percent moderate and 23 percent severe gingivitis. Periodontal status of type 2 diabetics was very poor with percentage of CPI 2, CPI3 and CPI4 as 37.5 percent, 43.3 percent and 19.2 percent, respectively. On average, each patient had 3 sextants with dental calculus (CPI2)
  1.5 sextants with periodontal pocket (CPI3 & CPI 4). 45.2 percent had degree 1 clinical attachment loss
  severe clinical attachment loss (degree 3&4) accounted for 12 percent. On average, each subject had 2.5 sextants with poor or disfunction. Conclusions: Periodontal disease in type 2 diabetics was quite serious and common.
