Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) makers were used to assess the genetic diversity of 42 Hopea odorata Roxb. samples collected from 9 provinces belonging to 3 forest ecological regions in Vietnam. 11 decamer primers used for the analysis generated 222 bands of which polymorphic bands were found 100 percent. Coefficient of similarity ranged from 0.67 to 1.00. The samples can be divided into 5 groups: Group I: S-KT-3-6 (Dac Ha, Kom Turn)
S-TP-l,2,3,5 (Dinh Quan, Dong Nai)
S-CP-1-3 (Chu Prong, Gia Lai)
group II: S-KH-3 (Van Ninh, Khanh Hoa)
S-MG-I-4 (Mang Yang, Gia Lai)
S-BMT-3,6,7 (Buon Me Thuot, Dac Lac)
group III: S-CT-2-5 (Tan Phu, Dong Nai)
S-HCM-I-3 (Ho Chi Minh)
S-BD-2,3,6,7,10 (Bu Dang, Binh Phuoc)
group IV: S-BC-I-5 (Xuyen Moc, Ba Ria - Vung Tau)
S-BT-l,3,6,7 (Ham Thuan Bac, Binh Thuan)
group V: S-KH-l,2 (Van Ninh, Khanh Hoa). Genetic similarity indeces of groups I, II, III, IV and V were high, machting 0.82, 0.81, 0.79, 0.77 and 0.94.
