Pinus kwangtungensis Chun ex Tsiang is an endangered fine-needle pine found for the first time in Vietnam in Hang Kia - Pa Co nature reserve, Hoa Binh province. The species belongs to group 1 under Decision 32/2006/ND - CP of Government which is strictly protected by the law. In order to conserve and develop the rare and precious pine species the current research has conducted an assessment of conservation status of the pine in the nature reserve and experiments on seed sowing and propagation of the species by branch cuttings. The survey showed that the population of the pine in the reserve is estimated about 166 mature pine individuals left which are threathned by limited regeneration capacity and artificial logging. Seed collection and sowing was successful with germination percentage up to 21.9 percent on filter paper. Propagation by branch cuttings in non-mist conditions is also proved to be effective for the pine, reaching up to 53.3 percent of rooted cuttings when using young mother plants with diameter less than 6 cm. Successful propagation of the endangered pine serves as the basis for further ex-situ plantation and replanting in its natural habitats for conservation purpose.
