This study was performed from 8/2011 to 8/2011 on 45 patients undergoing elective abdominal and lower limb orthopedic surgery in Viet-Tiep Hospital. The results showed that 100 percent patients gained excellent and good analgesia, EVA from 1 to 3. There were no circulation and respiratory complications. Objectives: To evaluate the initial results of epidural anesthesia for post-operative pain relief in lower limb at Viet-Tiep Hospital in Hai Phong. Subjects and Methods of the study: 45 patients underwent elective abdominal and lower limb orthopedic surgery, ASA 1-2, from 16 to 75 years of age at Viet-Tiep Hospital, Hai Phong. For each patient, Catheter is put into epidural space before operation, and after operation, according to the EVA pain scale, anesthetic containing Levobupivacain 0.125 percent and Fentanyl 2mcg/ml is continuously pumped with an electric pump at the rate of 3-5ml/h. Afterwards, evaluation is made in terms of the changes of pulse, blood pressure, Spo2, breathing, movement stress level, EVA scale, the patients' satisfaction, as well as complications and side effects. Prospective research with clinical interventions. Results: No significant change of pulse, blood pressure, Spo2. 100 percent of the patients got good pain-relief effect from the sixth hour, slight movement stress level 9 percent, post-operative urine retention 4 percent, nausea and vomiting 15 percent, all the patients felt satisfied with the pain-relief effect. No complications. Conclusion: After the investigation of 45 cases of epidural anesthesia for post-operative pain relief at Viet-Tiep Hospital, Hai Phong, it is found that this method is quite effective, and makes the patients satisfied with no complications and side effects.
