Purpose: Evaluating the therapeutic results of 238 patients with pituitary tumor by Rotating Gamma Knife at the Nuclear Medicine and Oncology Center of Bach Mai Hospital. Objects and Methods: From July 2007 to August 2010, 238 patients with pituitary were treated with Rotating Gamma Knife. All the patients had tumor size 5cm on MRI. Results: Male: 34.5 percent, Female: 65.5 percent
average age: 36.8 years old (from 13 to78). Clinical symptoms were reduced gradually after radiosurgery, comparison between pretreatment and at 36th month: headache (62.6 percent vs 4 percent), decreased sex drive (16.8 percent vs 6.2 percent), amenorrhea (17.6 percent vs 6 percent), vomit (10.1 percent vs 0 percent). Concentration of abnormal hormones of anterior and posterior gland had been improved after 3, 6, 12, 24 months. Before radiosurgery: TSH (mIU/l), LH (IU/l), FSH (IU/l), Prolactin (pmol/l), GH (ng/ml), Cortisol (nmol/l) concentrations were 8.2 + or - 4.1
  10.4 + or - 4.6
  12.8 + or - 4.4
  842 + or - 8.2
  54 + or - 6.1
12.10 + or - 9.6 respectively. At the time 36th month after radiosurgery, average hormone levels were normalization: 2.8 + or - 1.1
  8 + or - 2.1
  9.2 + or - 3
  204 + or - 2.5
  11.2 + or - 1.3
112 + or - 3.9 respectively. Size average of the tumor was reduced but not as clearly as the hormone level, from 2.1 cm before to 0.6 cm after 36 months. There were no severe side effects or death in our follow up. Conclusion: Radiosurgery with Rotating Gamma Knife is an effective and safe therapeutic method for patients with pituitary tumor.
