After 20 years of intervention (1991-2010), the malaria situation in Son La province was as follows: In the period 1991-2010, there were 12,732 malaria cases on average each year, accounting for 0.3 to 65.7/1,000 population and the incidence decreased 16.5 percent. In 2010 the incidence was reduced 99.9 percent as compared with that in 1991. There were yearly 7.3 cases of 100 malaria cases infected with malaria parasites, in which the rate of P. falciparum was 81.9 percent. The rate of positive examined slides was 1.3 percent. The annual average mortality rate was 3.9/ 100,000 population. A total of 12, 717 malaria patients received the treatment each year and this number were reduced over the years. From 1991 to 2010, there were 40 malaria epidemics all over the province which two epidemics per year. The outbreak happened mainly in 1991 and 1993. From 1994 to 2010 there was none. From 1991-2010, there were 311,623 people protected from the disease each year with the average coverage of 34 percent of the provincial population. KAP survey in 2010 showed that the people who knew mosquito-borne malaria accountedfor 78.3 percent, 87 percent of the population realized the risk of malaria
85 percent said it was a preventable disease, 98 percent having fever came to health stations, 84 percent understood the importance of bed nets in malaria protection and 72.3 percent used chemicals to kill mosquitoes. In short, due to sound interventions the malaria in Son La province has dramatically declined in the last 20 years (1991-2010).
