Objectives. To evaluate safety and clinical results of percutaneous renal revascularization with stent placement to control hypertension and preservelrestore renal function in patients with atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis (ARAS). Method and results. From 01/2006 to 01/2012, 67 patients with 97 stenosed renal arteries undergoing revascularization with stent were followed-up for 35 + or - 9.5 months. Indications of revascularization for significant ARAS (greater than 60 percent diameter stenosis) included resistant hypertesion, flash pulmonary odema, recurrent heart failure, unexplained unilateral small kidney and renal failure. Clinical characteristics: age range: 33-84 years (median = 58.5 + or - 10.7), males: 43 (47.5 percent), 14 (14.9 percent) patients with diabetes mellitus, 51 (54.3 percent) patients with coronary artery disease 37 (39.4 percent) patients with renal failure, 13 (13.8 percent) patients with congestive heart failure, 35 (52.2 percent) patients with bilateral stenosis, 62 (60.8 percent) ostial stenosed arteries. The renal function improved or stabilized in 44 patients (65.7 percent) and worsened in 23 (34.3 percent). The BP control improved in 46 (68.7 percent) patients and worsened / stabilized in 21 patients (31.3 percent). Technical failure 4 (3.3 percent) due to stent displacement. Major complications: 2 patients with severe contrast-induced renal failure needing hemodialysis, 1 patients with renal artery perforation successfully treated by cover stent. Conclusions. Renal atery stent revasculaization was technically safe and had benificial effects on blood pressure control and renal function.
