The aim of research to know if the activity of AST, ALT, GGT have a predictive value in diagnosis and monitoring of metabolic syndrome (MS). Methods: 100 peoples were divided into 2 groups: patients (50) with the metabolic syndrome diagnosed by NCEP-ATP III (2001) criteria and control group (50 people) do not have this syndrome. Liver function tests, fasting blood glucose levels and lipid profile of the subjects were recorded. Results: The activity of AST, ALT did not differ between the groups with and without metabolic syndrome, while GGT increased in the group with metabolic syndrome compared with controls. Dividing the sample by quartiles values GGT from low to high, the result show that 50 percent of men have activity of GGT at a high level. In particular, the increase in GGT is proportional with blood glucose level. For women, this number was only 25 percent and an increase in GGT is proportional with triglyceride levels. Conclusion: Increased GGT in people with metabolic syndrome, although in the normal range could play important role in the early diagnosis of metabolic syndrome.
