In the history of Vietnam, piracy was one of the frequent obsession towards the life of people living along the seashore and in the islands
besides, it was often a threat to socio-economic development and the security of the country through the dynasties. In Vietnamese waters, there were many groups of pirates with different origins, the most reknown of them were the pirates of Cha Va (Java pirates), also called Cha Ba, Do Ba, Con Lon, coming from the present India, Malaysia and Indonesia
Nuy khau (Japanese pirates), also called Uy khau, Cai khau, coming from present Japan
Tau O (Chinese pirates) coming from China. In addition, there were also Cham, Vietnamese and even Western pirates in each specific time. Many place names, legends, historical and cultural monuments throughout the country contain elements directly related to the piracy as well as the operations against the pirates of Vietnam ancestors. At present, piracy is only a mark on culture, but the lessons of tireless struggle of Vietnam ancestors to protect the integrity of national territorial waters sovereignty still have practical value, both for the present and in the future.
