Objectives: To evaluate the results in patients who were treated surgically for scapular fractures at The Hospital for Trauma and Orthopedics of Ho Chi Minh city. Material and method: from 01/2008 to 122010, there were 18 patients (4 females, 14 males
mean age 32.5 years) with scapular fractures who were treated by open reduction and internal fixation. Sixteen of the fractures were caused by traffic accidents, 1 by fall, and 1 by violence. 14 patients had associated injuries. 9 patients were intra- articular fracture with displacement. The mean follow-up period was 15 months (range 10 to 44 months). Functional evaluations were made according to the scoring system described by Herscovici et al. Results: The results were excellent in 17 patients, fair in one patient. 14 patients had no pain, 4 had mild pain. The range of movement was greater than 120 degrees in both abduction and flexion, and the muscle strength was 5 in all patients except one patient had had brachial flexus injury. No postoperative complications were encountered. Conclusion: Although the number of patients are not so many and the follow up period is not so long. That the result were excellence in most cases in current study made us believe that surgical treatment is really useful in certain cases with scapular fractures.
