The study was carried out to evaluate the presence of Salmonella group/serotype in pig and chicken fecal samples at some farms of the southern provinces. The presence of Salmonella spp. was found by culture methods, isolation, biochemical reaction and serological reaction. A total of 566 fecal samples (184 pig fecal samples and 382 chicken fecal samples) were analyzed in the study. At the farms, the average infection rate of Salmonella spp. in pigs and chicken's feces was 21.3 percent (25 percent of the healthy pigs, 16.67 percent of the diarrhea pigs) and 12.5 percent in chickens (24.17 percent of the broiler, 0.83 percent of the hens). Whereas, at the slaughter-houses, the infection rate of Salmonella spp. in pigs and chickens was higher (40.79 percent and 27.46 percent respectively). There were 93 Salmonella strains isolated, belonging to 5 groups (A, B, C, D, E). In which, groups B accounted for the highest ratio: (39 percent in pig) and (71 percent in chicken). Serotypes detected in pig were S. Typhimurium (19.61 percent), S. Anatum (15.69 percent), S. Senftenberg (13.73 percent), S. Paratyphi B (5.88 percent) and the strains detected with low rate (1.96 percent) were S. Paratyphi A, S. Montevideo, S. Saintpaul. In chicken, serotype was detected with S. Enteritidis only, with the rate of 16.67 percent. Results of this study showed that the prevalence of Salmonella in pig was more diversity in terms of group and serotype compared to that in chicken. Particularly, the presence of Salmonella strains having ability to cause food poisoning for human consumption, and some new serotypes detected that were not reported in previous studies in Vietnam.
