 Background: Diabetes is undoubtedly one of the most challenging health problems in the 21st century. Homocysteine, a thiol containing amino acid, has emerged as a determinant for many complex metabolic disorders in the past few years. Hyperhomocysteinemia in Type 2 Diabetes make to a double risk factor create to increment complications. Objectives: The aim of the study was to examine the relationship of Hcy level with HbA1C, microalbuminuria (MAU) and carotid atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetic patients. Methods: A case - control study was carried out on 110 patients of Friendship Hospital (55 in type 2 diabetic patients and 55 in nondiabetic patients) from 5/2011 to 4/2012. Results and Conclusions: Plasma Hcy levels in microalbuminuric diabetics were higher than in normoalbuminurics (15,94 + or - 7,95 vs 12,06 + or - 3,13 umol/l, p=0,00003)
  Plasma Hey levels in type 2 diabetic patients with carotid lesions were higher than in nondiabetic patients (12,38 + or - 3,18 vs 10,44 + or - 3.12
  12,68 + or - 4,46 vs 11,07 + or - 2,80 umol/l, respectively), however no statistically significantly difference
  Plasma Hcy levels and HbA1C, MAU were correlated in diabetic patients (r = 0,107
  r = 0,211 respectively).
