Objectives: to describe mortality patterns of children under 5 years at general provincal hospitals in 2010. Method: A descriptive cross-sectional study. Study was conducted at provical hospitals of Hai Duong, Son La, Khanh Hoa, Binh Duong and Kien Giang. Results: A total of 271 children under 5 years were recorded at 5 provical hospitals in 2010. 70 percent of children under 28 days (neonatus) were died by prematurity. Congenital malformations and infections during perinatal period were causes with relative rates (about 10 percent per each). Children with 1-5 years, common .causes were infectious dieases, especilly pneumonia (16,1 percent) and injury 19,4 percent with half due to road traffic accidents. Conclusions: the findings give more information for evaluating and designing intervention programs for mother and children to reduce mortality in children under 5 years, especilly neonatus mortality.
