In recent years, pest outbreak constantly on coffee in Central Highland and caused considerable damages. Some insect species have become serious pest on coffee like cicadas in 2006 and the coffee hawk moth (Cephonodes hylas) damages hundreds of ha in 2010. The coffee hawk moth was reared individually at temperatures of 27.45°C, 28.58°C and humidity 66.1 percent, 70.98 percent (in Hanoi), at temperature of 25.20°C, 27.62 and humidity 65.86 percent,74.85 percent (in Daklak) in the laboratory. The larvae had five instars, the life cycle of coffee hawk moth was 39.58 days, 37.77 days, respectively (in Hanoi) and 39.36 days, 30.49 days, respectively (in Daklak). The number of eggs laid per female was 55.4, 76.67 eggs (in Hanoi) and 45.33, 83.5 eggs (in Daklak) at above-mentioned conditions, respectively. The rate of hatching were 75.68 percent,82.96 percent (in Hanoi) and 79.57 percent, 95.14 percent (in Daklak) at the temperature previously given. The cofee hawk moth appear around year, but highest density was the dry season from March to the early May, that was 5.32 individuals/plant (20/4/2011) and in 2012 was 4.4 individuals/plant, after that its density considerably decreased in the rain season.
