Hemophagocytosis, the histological appearance of blood-eating macrophages is seen in the disorder hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) and other contexts. HLH is a potentially fatal disease characterized by abnormal activation of T-lymphocytes and macrophages. Objective: Find out some clinical and biological features of the cases with hemaphagocytosis in the bone marrow film at the Hue central hospital. Subjects and method: 118 patients treated at all clinical departments of Hue central hospital in 2010 and in 2011. These patients have been required for bone marrow aspiration and their bone marrow film have some hemaphagocytic images. Result and conclusion: The disease can occur at all degree of age and both sex. 55 percent cases have enough criteria to diagnose HLH and 45 percent cases have no enough criteria to diagnose HLH. The cardinal symptoms are prolonged fever, cytopenias, hepatosplenomegaly. Biochemical markers include elevated ferritin and triglycerides, low platelet count and Hb. Awareness of the clinical symptoms and of the diagnostic criteria of HLH is important to start life-saving therapy in time.
