Objectives: to study the early and long term complications of vitrectomy on severe proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Subjects: a group of patients with severe diabetic retinopathy were treated with vitrectomy in Fundus Department, VNIO. Methods: prospective descriptive study. Vitreo-retinal lesions and other associated lesions were thoroughly evaluated on slit lamp, ultrasound, and OCT. The standard 3 way vitrectomy was done under the wide angle view system (BIOMS). The early and longtenn complications were followed. Result: 58 patients (74 eyes). Early postoperative complications: transient increased lOP: 9,4 percent
cataract: 13,5 percent within first week, after 2 weeks 14.9 percent. Recurrent vitreous hemorrhage: 21 percent. Late complications: NVG: 7/74 eyes, cataract after 2 months was 46,1 percent, after 3 months was 56 percent. Conclusion: vitrectomy in the severe proliferative diabetic retinopathy was complicated with high rate of early and late complications.
