Objective: to study on the characteristics of clinic and characteristics of blood and bone marrow smears as well as to determine the frequency of underlying pathology of pancytopenic patients hospitalized at Hue Central Hospital. Materials: 121 patients with pancytopenia among 679 patients who were hospitalized the first time in Hue Central Hospital from 1/1/2011 to 31/12/2011. They were indicated completely blood count, bone marrow aspiration and lor bone marrow biopsie. Method: Retrospective descriptive study. Results: Male/Female =1/1.16. The mean age of the patients was 47.0 (range 2-94) years. The most common group of age was over 60 (30.6 percent). The clinical symptoms were pallor 82.6 percent, bleeding 39.7 percent, fever 34.7 percent, bone pain 16.5 percent, hepatomegaly 13.2 percent, splenomegaly 12.4 percent and adenomegaly 7.4 percent. The most common cause was aplasia anemia 32.2 percent, the second was acute leukemia 27.3 percent
the other causes were myelodysplatic syndrome 19.8 percent, hypersplenism 5.0 percent, macrophage activation syndrome 5.0 percent, kahler 3.3 percent, disseminated lupus erythematosus 1.7 percent, infection 1.7 percent, and unknown 4.0 percent. Conclusion: These results contributed effectively to pathological study helped in planning the diagnostic
treatment and prognostics in pancytopenic patients.
