Objectives: To evaluate the clinical features and some affecting factors of traumatic retinal detachment (RD). Subjects: 151 patients (151 eyes) with traumatic RD who were treated in Department of Ocular Traumatology, VNIO from 2005 to 2008. Methods: descriptive, prospective. All patients were thoroughly examined clinically and with ultrasound, ERG to note the necessary information: type of injury
time from injury to onset of RD, the vitreo-retinal lesions and other damages. Results: 94 percent were males
6 percent were females
mean age: 28.8 + or - 14,6. Contusive RD accounted for 54.3 percent (where the vitreo-retinal lesions were seen in 93.1 percent), the remaining 45.7 percent was due to penetrating injuries where the vitreo-retinallesions (mainly vitreous hemorrhage - 76.8 percent) happened in all cases. Total RD was seen in 49 percent. RD with macula off accounted for 86 percent.100 percent had PVR. Severe PVR was seen in 17.1 percent RDs due to contusion and in 42 percent RDs due to penetrating injuries. The associated lesions varied a lot. The vision was usually poor. Conclusion: Traumatic RD was a severe disease that was frequently seen in young males. RD was usually complicated with diverse associated lesions.
