This research aims at optimization of extraction procedure using EDTA to soil and sediment samples taken at paddy fields, outskirts of Hanoi, Vietnam. Extraction yield of Cd from samples was found highly dependent on pH. On the other hand, pH did not strongly influence on the extraction of Pb. Cadmium was easily extracted in acidic medium with an efficiency of up to 95 percent (in soil 8T4 - sandy soil). This study also shows a potential contamination of Pb at some points where Pb was concentrated up to 393 ppm. Kinetic extractions of Cd and Pb by using EDTA show that Cd was more mobile than Pb.
