Background: Human epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) is a type of adipose tissue functioning as a metabolically active endorine organ by secreting several hormons and adipocytokines. Objectives: In this study, the article aimed to access the relationship between EAT measured by 20 echocardiography and the components of the metabolic syndrome. Methods: 69 patients (37 with metabolic syndrome and 32 without) were enrolled in the study. The metabolic syndrome was classified using NCEP-ATP III criteria. Epicardial fat thickness was measured by the methods proposed by lacobellis and cs with parastenal long axis view on the mid-ventricula level. Results: The mean EAT thickness significantly increased in the patients with the metabolic syndrome (6.7 + or - 1.7mm vs 3.5 + or - 1.02mm, p0.001).
