Zoledronic acid (marketed by Novartis under the trade names Zometa) is a bisphosphonate. Zometa is used to prevent skeletal fractures in patients with cancers such as multiple myeloma and prostate cancer, as well as for treat or prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, and to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis. Herein, we describe the method for the synthesis of Zoledronic acid from imidazole in 3 steps. The structure of Zoledronic acid and intermediate products were estabilished by MS and NMR spectroscopies.
