The study reviewed the prospective database of 79 consecutive unselected patients undegoing laparoscopic total mesorectal excision (TME) for rectal cancer from 2004 to 2011 (47 males and 32 females, median age 55.4 + or - 12.5 years). 32.9 percent underwent anterior resection with the safety margin 2 cm. The median operating time was 170.2 + or - 57.3 minutes). The total Intemational Prostate Symptom Score was increased after surgery from 6.2 + or - 3.1 to 9.3 + or - 5.1, (p = 0.012). Intemationallndex of Erectile Function were significantly decreased after segery. Total mesorectal excision by laparoscopic surgery for rectal cancer showed relative safety in preservating sexual and voiding function for non invasive tumors.
