Mesoporous silica SBA-15 prepared from two different silica sources has been used as a hard template for the synthesis of mesoporous carbon materials. The first carbon solid used the TEOS/SBA-15 template gives a higher surface area and narrower pore sizes, thicker wall whereas the se.condone from silicate solution/SBA-15 shows a less ordered structure, lower surface area, and pore volume. The experimental data also indicated the latter carbon sample always has a small amount of retained sodium silicate.
