The Western idea of democracy which was first introduced in Vietnam in the early twentieth century was immature and arrived by way of colonialism and literature. A campaign for democracy in Vietnam was founded by Duy Tan (new way of thinking) Confucians and was important at the time because it promoted the role of the people and initiated a program called "Improve people's knowledge, enhance their sense of patrotism and take care of their lives", as well as for selecting a new form of quazi-democratic politics.
