 Aims: access clinical and sub-clinical evidence and the results of first-aid treatment of Paraquat poisoning in Hai Duong General Hospital. Objects and methods: Patients who take paraquat to commit suicide and are given emergency treatment. Patients are diagnosed with clinical and paraclinical evidence on admission to hospital. Observe clinical changes and do experiments. First access the results of emergency treatment. Results: Counting up the 45 cases of paraquat poisoning in Hai Duong Hospital during the two years period, the authors found out that: those who got poisoned were mainly young people, among whom students from Thanh Ha and Kinh Mon districts account for the highest proportion. The estimated amount of paraquat intake often ranged from over 20 ml of 20 percent solution to 200 ml (2 bottles). The patients are usually taken to district hospital during the first hours. 82 percent were taken to provincial hospital within 6 hours. Patients showed symptoms of coma and respiratory failure were intubated (15.6 percent)
  mouth scald and ulcer occupied 31.1 percent and 17.8 percent showed evidence of limited urination, 13.3 percent showed evidence of lung damage on Xrays. The patients showed evidence of liver and kidney damage: Creatinin 233.5 + or - 35.9 (Max: 1114 memol/l)
  total/direct Bilirubil: 29.7 + or - 8.5/ 19.1 + or - 6.2
  GOT/GPT: 90.2 + or - 21.5/56.9 + or - 12.8 U/L. The condition worsened with 68.9 percent coma and respitatory failure, 51.1 percent mouth and throat ulcer developed. The statistics to access liver and kidney function indicated that liver and kidney damage became worse over the following days. 57.8 percent got worse and died
  17.8 percent were transferred to upper line in serious condition
  31.1 percent successful treatment. Conclusion: Paraquat poisoning is very dangerous. An intake of 20mI of paraquat solution would lead to high death rate in spite of early admission and standard treatment.
