Background: Nosocomial Infection is common in the ICU, prolonged, increasing the cost of care, treatment and increased mortality. Objectives: 1. To determine the rate of nosocomial infections in the medicine ICU
2. To review the use of antibiotics in the medicine ICU of Viet-Tiep hospital. Methods: prospective cross description of the study. Research survey on the 21st day of each month, from 11/2012 to 03/2013, collecting data all the patients were treated at the ICU on time of the survey. Results: study 69 patients treated at the medicine ICU the authors found: The average age of patients with 66.09 + or - 17.19. 46/69(66,7 percent) patients had at least one chronic disease. The rate of nosocomial infections in the medicine ICU was 26.1 percent, origin of nosocomial infections from Viet-Tiep hospital was 77.8 percent (14/18), from other hospitals was 22.2 percent (4/18). Patients used combination of two antibiotics was 44.9 percent (31/69), 11.6 percent (8/69) not to use antibiotics, the most common sites of infection is respiratory 78.7 percent (48/61). Conclusions: The rate of nosocomial infections in the medicine ICU was 26.1 percent, which mainly originated in the Viet-Tiep hospital. Combination of two antibiotics was 44.9 percent, only 11.6 percent not using antibiotics. Indicated antibiotics in the community infections was 41 percent.
