The article reviews some texts for learning by heart in the literature textbooks for primarY education in the South of Vietnam before 1975. According to the author, despite some drawbacks due to historical circumstances, these texts took an important role in contributing to the formation of academic literature with rich, diverse and wholesome contents, and positive effect in fostering moral and mental education for young generation right from primary education. Then, the author recommends collecting and reintroduce some of texts for learning by heart in the old textbooks. The aim is to preserve a precious heritage which has been forgotten, as well as to give students attractive poems in order to enhance their literary sense and lead them to a wholesome life. In addition to the texts for learning by heart in old textbooks, pedagogic method as well as useful references can be provided for the syllabus restructure and textbook compilation that the state has intended to carry out in the near future.
