In this paper, the perspectives of Canale and Swain (1980) and Bachman (1990) on the concept of "communicative competence" are referred to in order to build an system of five types of speech exercises: Grammatical competence development exercises, Textual competence development exercises, illocutionary force competence development exercises, Sociolinguistic competence development exercises and Strategic competence development exercises. Creating an exercise system which is suitable for Vietnamese students would contribute to greater achievements in Literature. The goal is to train students to have greater communicative competence and have hightened listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
