The La Hu people in Tan Bien and Pa U villages of Pa U commune (Muong Te district, Lai Chau province) preserve many traditional cultural factors of marriage due to their relatively isolated residence. In addition to the rule of exogamy, the local people practice their tradition of cross-cousin marriage and youth enjoy the freedom and marry for love. However, consanguineous and paternal marriage continues to be popular in the La Hu community as it provides households with more labor. In addition, the La Hu maintain a tradition with three wedding ceremonies: the proposal of marriage, betrothal, and wedding ceremony. Their specific feasting characteristics require squirrel or mouse meats. After the wedding, the bridegroom can live with his wife in his parents-in-laws' house or live in his own house depending on the agreement of the bride's family and the bridegroom's negotiated in the betrothal ceremony.
