Coagulation prior to membrane filtration is known as one efficient way for the reduction of membrane fouling rate in many cases. However pre-coagulation at inappropriate conditions may also make membrane fouling from bad to worse. In order to contribute much more evidence, the present study aimed to examine the effects of pre-coagulation using polyaluminum chloride (PACI) on fouling control of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) micro filtration membrane during filtering low turbidity river water. The experimental results showed negative effects of pre-coagulation at low PACI dosage (10 mg/l) as well as low pH (4.5). It was found that pre-coagulation has reduced membrane fouling significantly at PACI dosage of 20 mg/l in the range of pH 5.5-7.5. The foulants having small sizes were shifted to bigger floes and these ones tend to form a cake layer with less resistance so that the flux decline rate was prevented. Whereas the over dosage and higher pH cause positive but less impacts.
