Objective. Determine the situation of blood collection and blood use in five years in Blood Transfusion and Hematology Hospital Ho Chi Minh city in order to actively ensure the supply of safe blood and blood components for treatment. Methods. Retrospective analysis of voluntary blood donors, family donors and paid donors from 2007 to 2011. Analyzing the use blood and blood products in 5 years. Results: From 2007 to 2011. blood collected in Blood Transfusion and Hematology hospital increased from 104,633 units in 2007 to 193,439 units in 2011 (by 1.85 times). The majority of these were voluntary donors, the number incresed from 79.38 percent to 99.83 percent. The paid donors reduced from 19.92 percent to 0.03 percent. The blood collection met the majority of the need for emergency and treatment. In 5 years, blood consumption increased from 157.869 units to 324.652 units (by 2.06 times). The rate of use to erythrocyte volume increased from 63.14 percent to 99.12 percent
the use of whole blood reduced from 36.86 percent to 0.88 percent. The blood components such as fresh frozen plasma, platelet concentrates, cryo were used increasingly. Conclusion: In 5 years, from 2007 to 2011, blood collection in Blood Transfusion and Hematology hospital in HCM city increased, most of them were from vuluntary blood donors. In 2011, the rate of voluntary donors and paid donors was respectively 99.83 percent and 0.03 percent. Blood oollection met most of the blood demand in emergency and treatment The use of reel blood cell tended to increase dramatically year by year.
