The accident on Serepok bridge in Dak Lak on 17 May 2012 when a shuttle bus penetrated the bridge barrier and fell down to the river bed under the bridge has caused 34 fatalities and other 23 people badly injured. There have been discussions on the causes of the accidents blaming the technical condition of the vehicle, driver's error or other objective causes. However, the condition of the bridge with regard to traffic safety is questionable and considered to be one of the key culprits that significantly worsen the consequences of the accident. This paper discusses the current practice in bridge safety barrier design in Vietnam through assessing the cause for the collapse of the bridge 'barrier on this bridge. It is expected that the paper would draw the awareness of bridge design engineers and project owners for the importance of this secondary structural component in bridge safety.
