Pragmatic thinking in Vietnamese culture is an aspect of social consciousness. By making use of pragmatism, rather than superstitious beliefs and inexplicable tradition, people can better meet their physical needs. While pragmatic thought is manifested in different ways, the extent of its existence and practice reflects the attitude of the population regarding their personal needs. There has been a rather recent introduction of market mechanisms in Vietnam and the concurrent forms of pragmatism that have accompanied these market changes have both positive and negative manifestations. Determining the extent to which pragmatic thinking is practiced among the Vietnamese, and placing a value on this pragmatism, will promote theoretical thinking and indirectly contribute to the development of the nation.
