Within the scope of the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Prograrnrne of the Viet Nam Ministry of Health, a baseline survey on the actual situation on maternal mortality in 14 Northern mountainous and central highland provinces in the period of 2007-2008 was conducted, of which the most concerned results were found in seven provinces including Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Son La, Cao Bang, Lao Cai, Dak Nong and Gia Lai. The data analysis used the estimate method for missing female and maternal mortality cases to limit bias to a minimum, combined with the "estimate of weight and adjusment" technique to calculate the rate of matemal mortality to expose the realest figures which were represented for each province. The specific results are as follows: 1) 88 maternal mortality cases among 884 mortality cases of women at reproductive age (15-49) were detected in seven provinces. The rate of matemal mortality among total mortality cases of women at reproductive age (15-49) was 10 percent. 2) The ratio of maternal mortality after adjustment in seven provinces was 168/100,000 live births, of which the most was found in Oien Bien (409/100,000 livebirths) and Lai Chau (215/100,000 livebirths). 3) The rate of matemal mortality in seven provinces was 13.4/100,000 women aged 15-49. 4) The risk of maternal mortality in seven provinces was 1/222 women aged 15-49.
