Objective: Evaluate the role of dichlorophenolindophenol on screening hemoglobin E in the Khmer ethnic in some provinces of the Mekong delta. Patients and methods: Blood samples of 426 subjects were tested complete blood count, osmotic fragility and dichlorophenolindophenol test for screening of hemoglobin E. Hemoglobin electrophoresis was used to confirm HbE diagnosis. Results: prevalence of HbE gene carriers in the Khmer of Mekong delta is 25.4 percent. DCIP test had a sensitivity of 99.07 percent, specificity 96.86 percent, false positive value 3.1 percent and false negative value 0.93 percent. Conclusion: Khmer ethnic has a high prevalence of HbE, DCIP test is the best method for screening of HbE in the community.
