In September 2011, the Library of Oxford University publicized a digital publication of an ancient map of China, namely "The Selden Map of China", dating approximately to the Ming Dynasty. Based on this map, some Chinese scholars affirmed that the place names of Van Ly Truong Sa and Van Ly Thach Duong (called the Spratly and Paracel islands in the Chinese ancient bibliography) shown in the map were in the territorial waters of Guangdong province under the Ming Dynasty.
