The underlying physics of the parameters affecting the depth of local scour at bridge piers in hydraulic laboratory and the fields based on available data in the literature. The discussion is restricted to the local scour at unsubmerged bridges in straight channels with beds comprising noncohessive sediments and no tidal flows, waves. The proposed methodology can be used as guideline for desige of laboratory experiments to achive the maximum local scour depth.
