Using the cross-layer cooperative medium access control (MAC) protocol for ad-hoc wireless networks allows significantly improving the system performance. However, in some cases, the system performance in terms the throughput and the latency have not achieved as expected. In this paper, the authors propose the solution which adjusts the member competition mechanism and supports the automatic retransmission mechanism of the relay node based on the cross-layer cooperative MAC proposed by Shan et al. The analysis and simulation results show that the proposed solution achieves the higher throughput and the lower end-to-end packet latency than the previous protocol proposed by Shan et al., and the IEEE 802.11 DCF protocol, while the complexity increases slightly.
