Introduction: Accidents and injuries have become a public health problem receiving more and more concerns over the world. They have been one of the most common causes of morbidity and disability in some countries. According to statistics, the number of sea accidents and injuries in Vietnam has been increasing. There were over 100 accidents with the total of 22 deaths and missing people in 2011 and the first eight months of 2012 in the whole country. In some cases, the lack of first aids or improperly injury management made the victims more severe, even death. Objectives: The study is: To describe situation of accidents and injuries of offshore fishermen at Dong Hoi city, Quang Binh province. To Identify their ability to cope with accidents and injuries. Methods: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study. 500 Fishermen who worked at least 1 year on the ships of Bao Ninh commune, Dong Hoi city were interviewed directly by a structured questionnaire. Data on personal information, situation of accidents and injuries and the ability to respond sea accidents and injuries were collected. Descriptive statistical tests were applied using SPSS sofware 18.0. Results: 18 percent of fisherman had accidents & injuries (A & I) within 8 months before the time of data collection. Types of common accidents & injuries were soft tissue injuries (62.2 percent), drowning (31.1 percent), burns (3.4 percent), combination injuries (2.2 percent) and broken bone (1.1 percent). The divers, workers working on board and steersmen faced the highest risks of A & I with 27.3 percent, 18.6 percent and 17.9 percent, respectively. Major causes of A & I were slips (79.8 percent), impacts (55.6 percent), broken rope (28.9 percent). Most of injuries were located at their body and limbs (55.6 percent). 93.3 percent of victims must be absent from their work less than 3 days. 27.8 percent of them were delivered to the nearest health facility within 6 hours the fishing boats. Most of them were received first aid by train fishermen. 96.9 percent of fishermen had experience in first aid while only 13.6 percent of them knew methods preventing from A & I. Most of boats were equiped means and medications for first aid (81.8 percent). However, a few of boats were frequently checked for labor hygiene and safety as well as scheduled maintenance. Conclusion: Training knowledge and skills in preventing from A& I for fishermen and establishing sea rescue teams are suggested solutions with the aim at decrease in A & I for offshore fishermen.
