The purpose of the study was to assess several factors related to lipid disorders in elderly type 2 diabetes patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted on type 2 diabetic patients over 60 years old, diagnosed according to the WHO (2006) criteria. 259 subjects were treated at the out-patient Department of the National Geriatric Hospital from February, 2013 to March, 2013. The results showed that the proportion of patients with lipid disorders was 80.3 percent patients with lipid disorders had the waist circumference, mean blood pressure and proportion of macrovascular complications such as coronary heart diseases, cerebral infarction, and atherosclerotic carotid higher than those in patients without lipid disorders (p 0.05). The average levels of total cholesterol and LDL - C in women were statistically significant higher than men's (p 0.05). The triglyceride level in smoking alcoholic patients was higher than that in the non - smoker and nonalcoholic patients, (p 0.05). In conclusion, lipid disorders in elderly type 2 diabetes significantly increases the incidence of macrovascular complications. Lifestyle changes and control of risk factors contribute to prevent these complications.
