Describing the humorous nature of incongruity in an opposite scripts model with the three main ambiguities being linguistic ambiguity, pragmatic ambiguity and cultural ambiguity, the paper describes how the use of jokes can be of benefit in the English language classroom. Making use of humor and jokes when teaching and learning phonetics, phonology, lexicon, grammar and language skills is beneficial to learners of English as a foreign language in language skills development, learning motivation, low affective filter and humor appreciation.
