Objective: Evaluating results of scintigraphy in the diagnosis of bone metastases in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. The author conducting study on characteristics of bone metastases in hepatocellular carcinoma. Subject and method: 65 hepatocellular carcinoma patients treated at the No.108 Military Central Hospital, including 58 males and 7 females, mean age 59 +/- 12, range (30-83 year older). Patients received intravenous drug associated radioactive isotopes (15-20mCi) Tc-99m methylene diphosphonate tending to focus on the bone, this material will decay and gamma-ray emission that acquired by gammacamera and presenting the image where bone injury. Result: The upper quadrant right pain, loss of appetite, bloating and dyspepsia were clinical symptoms accounted for high percentage from 86.5 to 95.4 percent. The rate of AFP or = 300 was 36.9 percent, the liver enzymes and bilirubin level increased slightly mainly accounted for from 73.8 to 84.6 percent. Tumors localized mainly in the right lobe or both lobes, and most of the patients had or = 2 tumors (72.3 percent), 76.6 percent of patients had tumor or = 3cm. Bone metastases accounted for 32.3 percent, portal vein thrombosis accounted for 49.2 percent. Bone lesions were seen mainly in spine, pelvis. The rate of bone metastases was higher in patients with AFP or = 300 IU/ml than in whom with AFP 300 (p0.01). Conclusion: Scintigraphy is a valuable method for diagnosing bone metastases in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. The proportion of bone metastases in patients with HCC was 32 percent, AFP or = 300 ng/ml was significantly related with the status of bone metastases.
