Commercial farming of white leg shrimp in Nghe An has been played an important role in the development strategy of the fisheries sector in the province. An investigation of the current status of techniques and economic efficiency used in white leg shrimp farming was carried out during January to June 2010. 1n this study, the authors conducted a survey, sampling and interviewing 120 households out of 925 households in Quynh Luu, Dien Chau, Nghi Loc districts, Vinh city and Cua Lo town. The results showed that semi-intensive farming is mainly practiced, accounted for 53.3 percent, pond area ranged from 0.3 to 1.5ha with an average area of 0.58 +/- 0.01ha per pond, ponds were rectangular shape with the average depth of 1.43 +/- 0.015m (ranging from 0.6 to 1.8m), pond bottom with muddy sand accounted for 69.2 percent. Pond preparation after each culture crop was focused by farmers, especially in forms of semi-intensive and intensive farming. Profits gained was various among culture models, gradual increasing from improved extensive to intensive farming models. Profits gained in improved extensive, semi-intensive and intensive models of culture were 54.4, 212.8 and 267.2 million VND, respectively. Farming of white leg shrimp also created jobs, generated incomes and improved the efficiency of land use. The study also proposes a number of solutions related to culture techniques, planning and development policies for farming of the white leg shrimp in the province in a sustainable way.
