The mesothelium is a squamous monolayer that ensheathes internal organs, lines the body cavity, and the diaphragm. It serves as a protective barrier, coated in glycocalyx, and secretes lubricants to facilitate tissue movement. How the mesothelium forms is poorly understood. Here, we investigate
