Maternal immune activation (MIA) induces long-term cognitive impairments by modulating the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic system. Experimental evidence suggests that maternal immune challenge with bacterial active ingredient lipopolysaccharide (LPS) reduces GABAergic tone in the offspring's prefrontal cortex.
