INTRODUCTION: It is essential to adapt mobile health (mHealth) interventions to cultural contexts of target populations to enhance acceptance and effectiveness. This paper describes the translation and cultural adaptation process of an mHealth intervention to educate and support diabetes self-management among U.S. Vietnamese. METHODOLOGY: Eight essential dimensions of the Ecological Validity Model (EVM) guided the adaptation and emphasized culturally appropriate educational content and social contexts. RESULTS: By applying the EVM framework, cultural norms, values, and preferences of U.S. Vietnamese were aligned with the intervention. DISCUSSION: Through a systematic process employing the EVM, it was demonstrated that an mHealth intervention was culturally adapted among U.S. Vietnamese for diabetes self-management. Further research is needed to determine if this process is effective for other chronic conditions or other U.S. Asian groups. The EVM may serve as a valuable framework for transcultural nurses to adapt mHealth interventions for research, practice, and education.
