Microplastic pollution, particularly that from tire, presents critical environmental and public health concerns. They contribute 60 % of the total microplastic pollution. Tire-based microplastics, which contain synthetic polymers and toxic chemical additives, are significant contributors to microplastic pollution in aquatic systems. They release various hazardous substances, including heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and other persistent pollutants, which adversely affect ecosystems and pose risks to drinking water quality. Advanced oxidation processes (AOP) such as ultraviolet based treatment, ozonation and sulfate radical based processes show potential for mitigating these microplastics by fragmenting them and degrading the leached chemicals.
