Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) has been associated with mitochondrial dysfunction. We investigated whether mitochondrial DNA variants in peripheral blood leukocytes (PBLs), which affect proteins of the respiratory chain and mitochondrial function, could be associated with an increased risk and poor prognosis of IPF.
