The aim of this study was to investigate the performance and mechanism of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) biodegradation in seawater using a single-chamber bioelectrochemical system (SCBES). With an initial SMX concentration varying from 1 to 10 mg/L, the SMX removal decreased from 99.1 ± 2.0% to 89.6 ± 8.0% in the SCBES within 120 h under an applied voltage of 0.8 V.
